The Significance of Chanting in Yoga
Chanting or singing out loud is an integral part of Yoga. This also referred to as ‘Laya Yoga’. The Laya state as a higher spiritual state of Yoga could be described as an entry into divine consciousness or merging with Highest Consciousness using sound or vibrations thus generated as a medium.
Sometimes chanting could be incorrectly associated with a religion. It is simply a method used to reach the final goal – which is nothing but silence!
Studies have also shown that repetition is in some cases important, because it allows the mind to relax. It distracts the mind in a positive way and also helps pave the way to inner calm.
To practice chanting:
Sit in any comfortable position. Beginners may prefer to sit in less crowded/less noisy areas. Keep your back erect. Pick any benign syllable such as “OM”. Inhale and repeat the syllable for a few times. Adjust pauses in between repetitions to suit your style. Again the goal is to bring about a deep meditative silence within.
There could be various ways – try them for yourselves to get there.
Happy Chanting!
