The Ugly Toad [A Children's Story]
Princess Rose lived in a palace on the banks of river Zoe. This was one the biggest, most beautiful palaces ever built in that century and the credit for the same went to her father King Mazlen. He was a mighty warrior, fearless and strong - he who ruled his subjects with a disciplined hand but was at the same time fair and just!
Princess Rose lived a peaceful life filled with every imaginable luxury in the palace with her father, her mother and an older sister - Princess Annabelle. Everyone loved Princess Rose for she was the youngest of them all. She was a very beautiful, well mannered little girl - fit in every way to be a Princess!
She walked the gardens, played with her maids and her sister, talked to the flowers and did everything her little heart told her to do. Princess Annabelle on the other hand was a quiet girl - serious and level headed. She worried about Annabelle from time to time, specifically when the little one got carried away with their spontaneity...
It was on one beautiful morning, that Princess Rose was playing by herself next to the lily pond. The Sun shone brilliantly in the water and she stood mesmerized looking at the drops of water on the lily pads. They shone in the sunlight like little jewels.
"Croak...Croak" - a sound loud and clear disturbed her lost thoughts and she turned her little head to follow the sound. "Croak...Croak..."- it was even closer. There stood a big toad right next to her foot - big, fat and ugly!
But, the physical appearance of the toad did not deter the Princess from picking it up. She thought - "what a ugly little thing. Everyone must hate it. The poor thing must be so lonely". Thus thinking, she began to play with it. The toad jumped from the bank to the lily pad and back to her open palms - it seemed to revel in her attention. It seemed to be trying to please the Princess with it's tricks!
She decided to take it home. Back to her palace. Days rolled by and the more time passed, the more she seemed to enjoy the ugly toad. She woke up with it, ate with it and played with it. Sharing her food, and her bed with it.Everything else was forgotten.
The toad on his part thought this was real too - he seemed to have an audience finally! And he began to imagine that he actually belonged in the palace too.He had forgotten his real identity!
Princess Anabelle did not like the whole thing. She was worried about the ugly toad taking up so much of Princess Roses' time and attention. She tried talking sense to her little sister that she should not get carried away and everything in life had it's own place. But, her advise fell on deaf ears.
One fine day, the Princess woke up feeling ill. She stood up from the bed and fell to the floor. Unable to wake up or even see the light. The royal doctor was immediately summoned. He took his time to analyse the strange illness, and finally concluded that the Princess was poisoned! Everyone was shocked. Our little Princess poisoned? But, how in the world would that have happened?
Then it all came to Princess Annabelle! Yes, that was it! The ugly toad!
Of course, Princess Rose had shared even her food with it - and what else would you expect? Her worst fears had come true!
They immediately took the toad back to the lake much to the little Princess' misery - but, she was surely more precious than the ugly toad. The little Princess cried and sulked - and as days rolled by she got better and stronger. She missed the ugly toad, but her sister took care of her in every little way. She ensured that Princess Rose was busy and tried everything in her power to keep her happy! The ugly toad was soon forgotten and everything was back to being normal!
They had saved the Princess! They thanked that it was behind them and lived happily ever after!
Moral of the story: Do not forget your identity - always be what you are! Never give anything more importance than it deserves! And always listen to your parents and elders - they know what is best for you!!!
A very cute song:
